Acupuncture & Traditional Chinese Medicine
The origin of Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) dates back thousands of years ago and has continually evolved as an effective natural method at helping to balance the body. Considering all aspects of the body, including the mind, emotions, and spirit, to customize treatment plans for each individual and treat the root cause of illness rather then symptomatically. Traditional Chinese Medicine uses customized herbals formulas made specific to each individual and various methods such as acupuncture to treat or prevent health imbalances. Acupuncture is the insertion of very fine needles into specific locations all over the body to stimulate the body’s own natural healing process. This method is very gentle and often quite relaxing.
Acupuncture & Traditional Chinese Medicine can help treat conditions such as:
- Menstrual disorders
- Menopausal symptoms
- Digestive disorders
- Anti-aging facial rejuvenation
- Headaches, migraines
- Muscle and joint pain

Please read our page on Calgary Fertility Acupuncture for more information about these specialized services.
Upon an initial visit with your TCM practitioner you will go through an in depth intake talking about all of the different systems in your body to see what shows out of balance. Once a TCM diagnosis has been made a treatment plan for optimal success will be discussed. Treatment plans are very individual depending on what is being worked on and your own body’s response. For example often with fertility as the treatments will very week to week with the menstrual cycle, weekly sessions are ideal for about 12 weeks. For muscular tightness, often a few treatments are sufficient for relief.
Acupuncture needles used for hormone/ body balancing are very fine and gentle. Normal sensations with needle insertion is a very slight poke, some people don’t feel much at all. Once the needle is in place in Acupuncture we aim to get a ‘de qi’ sensation which may feel like a heaviness, distending feeling, or a gentle grab. If the needles sensation is ever uncomfortable it is quickly removed.
It is best to book in for an initial consultation so a treatment plan can be made specific to you and your body. There is no time that is too soon. The sooner you start treatment the quicker you will feel better!
Fertility – again the sooner the better. Treatment will be customized to regulate the hormones depending on where you are in your cycle.
Pregnancy – It is a safe and helpful medicine during the first trimester for support or symptomatic relief. During the second trimester it is a great tool for muscular discomfort. During the third trimester it is recommended to get weekly treatments at 36 weeks for labour preparation and then later encouraging.
